CWS probably explained why this was a distance-based credit: changes to the trip.
First, This was issued as J and upgraded to F. That change may have caused spend-based to be lost.
In addition, AA being AA, the flight back changed. It was originally EZE-JFK-DCA but AA cancelled the EZE to JFK flight so it had to be reticketed via MIA on a different flight.
Complicating this even further, the flight from EZE to MIA was credited as "R" (Business Class), not "F" as flown. AA told BA that this was properly credited as it was upgraded. 1800 nTPs lost. That's been AA's stance for some time, that upgrades credit to the originally booked cabin. However, that raises the questions about spend-based credits and whether or not the cost of an upgrade is included in the spend used to calculate nTPs on AA flights.
