I'm in training with a United 777 pilot right now (A&P school) and asked his thoughts on Channel 9-

He said in the past he always left it on for the passengers, but after an incident where a passenger complained about something they misunderstood over ATC he leaves it off now.

The passenger filed a complaint with United regarding the crew, helping to ruin it for us ATC nerds.
