It is standard for BA not to release the exact gate until ~60 mins before the flight or less depending on the situation, especially for short haul flights. The gate areas are small and they would much rather you wait in the main terminal area / shopping mall than crowding the gate area, especially if they're not 100% sure what the exact gate will be until closer to the flight.
And not all gates require a train ride, only the outer T5 B & C gates. Everyone is in the same boat and will be coming from the same place once the gate is announced.
