It (hopefully) shouldn't be any issue to claim UK261 against the original cancellation but I could see trying to get it twice with AA would muddy things up.
Now, in a hypothetical case where you were rebooked to say a regular DL flight the next day, and that DL flight ended up delayed 6 hrs, then in that situation you could probably make two claims against both AA and DL.
I actually want to follow up since I just completed the claims process. I want to outline the timeline from the initial complaint until payment, which was received today. A more important data point is that AA did pay out for both flights under UK261, the original cancellation and the delayed re-booking, without issue or push back.
Jan 12: Initial claim sent to
[email protected]; no response or automated bounce back email.
Jan 16: Resent the claim through the customer complaints portal on AA.com to issue a reference number
Jan 23: Agent from AA calls and apologies regarding flights. Says compensation will be paid in 3-4 weeks.
Jan 26: The same agent from AA follows the call up with an email and specifies the compensation amount in writing.
Feb 4: Compensation received via check. Includes my out-pocket-hotel expense in addition to the 2x £520 refund.
Not sure if getting paid out twice was luck or actual policy but does seem worth asking for if people in the future have similar issues as I described back in post #408.
