Use AA for destinations that AS doesn't fly to--even if AS will allow you fly to those destinations with AS miles, they will frequently be higher (or MUCH higher) using AS compared to AA. For example, I used 6.5K AA miles to fly LEX-PDX next August whereas AS would have likely charged at least 15K. If you're going to an AS destination or long-haul international travel on a partner, you're likely better off using AS miles since you'll get EQMs for the award travel that you won't get using AA miles. Giving EQMs for award travel is the #1 reason I'm able to qualify for Platinum status otherwise I'd be stuck at Gold if it were only based on revenue tickets.
The destinations I am looking at are mostly flown by AA and not Alaska. For example. PHL to Nice is operated by AA. It is the same points both on Alaska and AA.
