For me, and I assume others too, it is to hedge against upgrades not clearing. You really don't want to fly AY PE, but you still have vouchers to spend.
Yeah, I know... still a fate I'd try to avoid by any cost, contact cs and pay for changing the date of the flight if they could confirm upgrade on any following flight 😅 such is the dread that AY PE & Y exude. But obviously that doesn't work if you have tight schedules...
