AS Visa earning will be slow in Jpn, and it’s not a card that will provide significant perks if you reside outside of N.America.

How about Venture X? For every $ you spend in Jpn, it will get you 50% more JAL miles vs the AS miles you will earn on AS card. I think my math is right. Plus you have the freedom to choose other transfer partners.
