I stay here occasionally when I am attending an event in the area, despite living about 30 miles away. Being able to bring my dog makes it an easy choice, so I often consider it when I am going to a concert in Hollywood. I like the location and comfort/style of the hotel, and consider the area to be quite walkable (just be mindful of the freeway underpasses). They also have a nice pool, overlooking Hollywood, but they do occasionally have pool parties on the weekend. The neighborhood in general is a lot more geared towards younger adults than families, but I wouldn't let that deter you, as long as you are OK in urban areas. Hollywood definitely has a seedy side, and there is a lot of nightlife in the vicinity, so don't be expecting Downtown Disney vibes here.
Despite all the claims in here, I don't recall ever getting parking as the password prize, so don't be surprised if it doesn't happen. The current charge is $70/night, which is pretty absurd, even by LA standards. I have occasionally risked street parking and never had any issues, but I usually just book something nearby on SpotHero. There is a very secure garage a few blocks south, across from the Palladium, that is usually quite cheap. The walk to the Red Line is perfectly safe and easy (actually now called the B Line, but even many of us locals can't keep the letters straight). You may cross paths with a few colorful characters, but simply minding your own business and having a modicum of common sense is almost always all you need. It is the only sensible option for getting between Hollywood and Universal, and it also quite convenient for getting to K-Town or downtown.
