Not sure it's a "weird" choice - pretty standard reverse herringbone arrangement. Even AirNZ and Virgin have abandoned the regular herringbone. All things considered I think UA has done well to have both options available. Sure, I'd rather be straight aligned with the window, facing backwards, with no coffin for my feet and shins, but you can't have everything... !
I'd maybe call it an "interesting" or even "intriguing" choice to mix reverse and true herringbone. The herringbone in the aft cabin should be nicer for couples, the reverse herringbone up front provides more separation for solo travelers.
