It's interesting to watch the number of people who go up to the counter with questions before boarding starts, especially in HKG and TPE.
Personally I never ask these days. For single PNR, standard upgrades, I know there is a priority list, and I am on it somewhere. I remember a trip back from LAX where a number of folks ended up due to other ex-US flight/s being cancelled - I was checking in via the lounge, and was stunned as to how many pax were getting very heated at the staff member re: their now-cancelled upgrades not being confirmed on their rebooked flight. I didn’t ask about mine, but was confirmed at boarding 😉
