We just bookended a trip to SE Asia with one night stays at both Rosewood and Raffles. While they were completely different in tone, we enjoyed both. PP was surprisingly quiet for high season, attributed in part to the border fighting with Thailand. As such, the service was
excellent at both since the hotels were calm, almost too calm.

We have all seen many versions of the Rosewood: office building with arrival lobby near the top and rooms below. Luxe, neutral rooms that don’t scream with a sense of place but are well fitted and have spectacular views. The rooms were quiet and it was a pleasure to spend time there after outings in the heat. We only ate in the casual brasserie which was fine, noteworthy for the lovely staff more so than for the food.

Raffles, OTOH, screams of being the destination, not just a place to sleep. There are so few places like this in the world that it was a must to try. We were in a suite in the main building that was decently up to date and comfortable. I do agree with the poster above who commented on the small corner showers being disappointing. There is just so much that can be done with these historical buildings and this is a prime example. As well, it could use a bit of TLC with doors a bit poorly fitted, som paint touch ups, etc.

All that said, for a short stay it was transporting to wander the long, shaded hallways or sit by the pool. As with all hotels of this ilk a lot is made of former guests and historical photos abound. The Elephant Bar is a lovely spot for a drink and the casual restaurant had more than acceptable food and good service. I knew exactly where I was at this property and that
was a plus.

For me, the Raffles was one and done - glad to have tried it but would likely go back to the Rosewood for the more up to date, comfortable rooms, giving up a degree of atmosphere.
They are located practically next to each other, so that is a push. Our favorite historical hotel
remains the MO BKK which we will always choose despite the burgeoning numbers of
prettier faces in town.
