It sounds like JAL is unlikely to move me to a HND departure (to luck into a DFW or JFK flight). I'm flexible with flying into any North American hub from NRT though To retain a F seat, which routes should I focus on?
Did you check your ressie in the JAL app? We had the exact same thing happen to us and were able to switch (in the JAL app) to the HND-ORD 1pm flight ourselves. Took 2m in the app. I then called AA and had them reissue the tickets. In the JAL app we switch flights +/- 7 days.....so you should be able to extend the trip if you'd like a few more days in Japan
Once you open your ressie in the app, select something like "change seats" or "change reservation ". It should open to a page that shows the schedule change. Somewhere on that page should be a button to either accept the change or look for alternatives. If you look for alternative flights you should be able to change to the HND flight that day and stay in F or even look the next few days.
When I did this I got a message that JAL made the change to the new flight but the ticket would be issued in due time. Since i don't ever trust an airline to actually reissue a ticket, I phoned up AA and they reissued the tickets right there. It was the easiest time I've ever had getting re-accommodated on a partner airline after a downgrade.
