Yes, the new exhaust stack for the Sydney Cross City Tunnel has been positioned directly behind the IMAX theatre, and it is an unbelievable bloody eyesore. Towering 60m tall, it's a scary future-themed triangular behemoth, due to start belching out the untreated exhaust from 90,000 vehicles per day in late 2005.
The other mess right now is the construction of Darling Park 3, an 18 story office complex right across Druitt Street from the hotel.
While I don't think either of these things would necessarily detract from a stay there, just be warned of construction noise and exhaust fumes. It is unfortunate that this city has spent so much time and money trying to revitalize DH, only to plonk the stack right down in the middle of it all.
Stayed there a week ago, and was a bit surpised by the scale of works going on around the hotel. While it was a bit of a pain to get to the hotel, once within the hotel wasn't much to notice (but then I never take much notice of the 'views' from my hotel room - I became accustomed to looking at the building next door, overlooking a car park that I barely even look out the window these days)
