In Peru there's an alliance with Claro and you could exchange the miles for Claro points and use them to buy a smartphone, can't remember the exact rate but it was decent (I thought about it but didn't, I ended up buying a refurbished phone). I'm not sure about redeeming on partner airlines.
All other alternative redemptions (at least here in Peru) don't seem like very good value.
