I originally got that card after being turned down for other Japanese credit cards, and then reading somewhere online that JALCARD was much easier on foreigners than the megabanks and credit card companies... it was handy for collecting miles on Suica charges.
I've still got one. Somehow when I applied with my middle name, they only took my first, so the card correctly shows FIRST LAST. I ended up getting my middle name legally dropped a few years later, and thankfully updating it with VIEW was quite easy, and they didn't need to re-issue the card.
It's definitely super handy for double-dipping on JAL miles and JRE points. Not to mention auto-charging my Suica has been such a quality of life improvement.
