Trip context: September trip to Bahrain. There is plenty of reward availability in Club World, but no First reward availability showing at all. However, I can see First A-class availability: A5 outbound and A7 return.
Goal: use my BA Amex Companion Voucher (2-4-1) to book a Club World Avios redemption for two, then apply my BA Gold Upgrade Voucher for two (GUF2) to upgrade J to F using the A bucket availability. I am Gold, not GGL, so don't have jokers, which I have seen mentioned as well.
When I called the Gold line earlier, they told me this was not possible, so wanted to check
Questions:
1. Is it possible to apply a GUF2 to a CW Avios booking made with an Amex 2-4-1 and have the upgraded sectors ticketed into First A class even when there is no First reward availability, but plenty of A-fare availability
2. Any recent data points on this working or failing, and any tips on what exactly to ask the agent to check on the call

This definitely should be possible with a GUF. And actually if GUF-ING into A class, you don’t even need the underlying reward availability in Club. And a joker is also not needed to open up A as this is already achieved by the GUF. But make sure there actually is A class available from your POC. Best way to do this is doing a dummy booking in app or website.
