I heard of a PRC+Canada citizen who lost their PRC passport and managed to use TWOV on their Canadian passport, or at least that's what they said to the airline, I don't know what happened when they actually got to the border. But that person is a special case because they seem to be officially permitted to maintain PRC+foreign citizenship which would not be allowed for ordinary people.
There are many mainlanders secretly holding dual passports (双持) despite against the Chinese laws. A very common practice among mainlanders came to US to study then later became US permanent residents/citizens. In the past they go in and out of China via 3rd countries esp thru Canada or SE Asia. Then came the TWOV. Gazillion discussions all over various Chinese forums such as WXC, Huaren and of course XHS plus other not so well known sites on how to manage such situation of dual passports despite against the Chinese laws.

People had Household Registrations 戶口 or PRC passports were told to cancel their registrations / surrender their PRC passports, such DPs I read about quite a few in 2024 and early part of 2025. It mostly happened at the exit. All quiet since then. I have not come across any such DPs anymore. The most “adverse” situations were being warned on next visit they need to take care of the cancellation of the Household Registration” then they were let go, that is all.

In fact the law requires visitors to report to the local security bureau (hotels would do this for you). Many who stay at families/relatives have not done so. Nobody got in trouble. China also officially abandons the policy that only certain hotels foreign can go to. Such hotels are marked on Trip.com for example. Sometime in 2925 central government issued 紅頭文件?that ALL lodging options are now open to foreigners. Meanwhile it also ordered Cash Paymeny must be accepted vs the payment methods limited to WeChat or AliPay via the QR codes - that has created lots of issues for visitors no doubt. Not any more. Merchants are now required to accept cash payment, else they would be fined if a complaint is filed by the customer. The direction of the wind has changed. For how long, nobody knows but my guess is, returning to the restrictions in the past is hardly unlikely in 2026 or months beyond. You know that when the 30 days visa free is extended to 12.31.26 with more countries added to the list.
