As others have mentioned, and despite a UL agent escorting me, a full itinerary, paper UL boarding pass and VS mobile one, airport security would not let me through to Transfers without a printed VS boarding pass - which I could not obtain before the VS check-in desks opened. So I was stuck in no-man's-land... Fortunately, VS staff were happy to bring my BP as soon as they opened, but it still meant over an hour sitting on a plastic chair in front of heavily armed security in the middle of the night!
Yes, having a printed not electronic boarding pass when transferring is critical - I've been told to leave the airport then go back in to check back in, which is a massive pain if VS checkin isn't open at that time. If you don't have an Indian Visa then you can't leave the airport so you get caught in a bind and reliant on the good will of VS staff to assist
