I don't believe the airlines have any visibility into whether you have an ETA or not. Otherwise, they could simply not let you check-in and/or call you to the gate. It's awfully expensive for the airlines to man 2-3 check stations at each UK flight from any airport just to have them ask if you have an ETA and simply take your word for it. I have seen people say no and the agents tell them to get one online. But I'm 99% confident right now I could still get on a plane if I answered that question 'yes' and didn't actually have one. What would happen at the far end I'm not sure. The e-gates seem to take the same amount of time as always to process so are they able to do a quick data dip in some database and see if I have an ETA?
Based on posts in this thread, the ETA is not currently enforced electronically and relies on passengers being honest. The e-gates do the same checks on your personal details as the ETA app but do not currently check that you actually have an ETA. But from 25 February 2026 it will be enforced and airlines will begin to deny check in to those who do not have one.
