ADL-SFO is longer than some other routes.
Over flying HNL by gcmap is only 15 miles extra, so effectively nothing. Landing & takeoff at HNL would take fuel & time (and more miles)

Happened to me a few weeks ago on UA2 SIN-SFO. Onc crew (of four pilots) got sick in SIN and could not fly. With three pilots, flight is limited to 12 hours. A replacement crew was dead-headed to HNL and took us the rest of the way to SFO. Total seat time was 19 hours (12 SIN-HNL, 2 in HNL to recrew and refuel, 5 to SFO). All-in-all, UA handled it very well.
