* Economy is roughly $2000/ticket (x4 of us), no matter the airline for round trip. Would love to avoid $8000 cash outlay if I can.
* FlyingBlue has no mileage flights available for the routing/dates we need, nor does any other transfer partner
* I have 350,000 some Chase points (most of which are still eligible to use at the 1.5 rate).
* Prefer Delta (I'm Platinum), but not required
Given this, my ideal would be:
* Book on Chase (would roughly be $2000 cash + use up the points)
* Find a magic way to turn these into a real Delta ticket (so I can get credits back/etc and have easier handling if issues)
If it's not possible, it's not possible - totally get it.
If you cancel, you still get the flight credit, but ya… you still have the brain damage of having to deal with Chase for the rebooking. In my limited experience (it’s happened maybe once or twice to me), if you run into an IRROPS situation, Delta will take over the ticket and not leave you stranded with Chase. That said, I am a Diamond 2MM, so I suppose YMMV.
I do remember it being a massive PITA to apply a GUC upgrade though.
