Introducing a new aircraft type, especially one that is going to operate over water, is not an exact science.
I also expect they are starting to see actual booking patterns on the newly announced routes where demand on some might be more robust than originally anticipated resulting in an up-gauge to a 787 or an A330.
YYZ-LHR was (and I assume still is) the busiest Canadian International route. I have serious doubts they would really put an XLR on that route. Even just for training purposes. Of course, i've been wrong before.
Edit:
I recall hearing something from Galardo about possible using the XLR for the LHR day-tripper. I'm not sure I get it as a daytime TATL flight is usually a horrible use of a fin in terms of fleet utilisation, so it needs a lot of premium money to operate and 14 J 0 PY does not scream premium. Or perhaps AC is willing to let an XLR sit there losing money versus a widebody. Narrowbodies already usually sit overnight anyways?
