Huh? PHX-SAN on AS is an easy upgrade. And AS has more extra legroom seats than AA. AS v. AA is an easy call in AS favor if you have status on either airline.
YMMV as an Atmos Platinum, but upgrades for Golds have fallen off of a cliff - regardless of route.
My other point is that AS is cutting routes elsewhere, surprised to see precious capacity deployed on SAN-AA hub routes, where there is typically adequate capacity.
