100 countries, and I'm really stuck on India's process. US citizen, tourist, <30 days. Touring Delhi, Agra, Jaipur on my own.

Attempted the online visa, but stuck at 'reference name', etc. The definition is providing the name of someone I know in India. I do not know anyone.

Am I understanding that I must apply prior to arriving as the US is not one of the countries that VOA is available? If so, any suggestions for a 'reference name' workaround?
