After looking at this ticket again, I think snagging PS for $650 made this all work especially as the same cabin more than doubled in price since then, making a similar upgrade offer closer to retail J in total cost.

Or to put it another way, after a few days of reflection, I’m very excited about this deal.
While they haven't been discounting revenue D1 fares on SEA-TPE, they did have discounted sub-100K D1 awards on the route for quite some time after introduction. They currently start at 157K with Amex discount. SEA-ICN currently has D1 awards from 110K with Amex discount vs. $2630 for revenue fares.
