It's the carrot and stick principle - if you dangle a big enough incentive, people will respond with their business. If you notice that previous FF'ers are no longer showing up, you find a way to get them back. CO seems to have stopped "dangling".
And this reminded me that SW is a very smart airline.
I too got the fly two, get one free offer under similar circumstances (fairly regular traveler on WN, but haven't taken a flight on them in a few months), and I agree that WN does an outstanding job of enticing its better travelers to return and/or stay loyal. The comparison to CO's callous disregard for former elites is stark.
