40 is the correct number of PlusPoints for this itinerary, because BKK-HKG is in B. This sounds like another example of UA allowing for a PE flight to delegate to Y on a short flight when the specific PE fare bucket isn’t available on the short leg. They don’t do this with J, which is why it doesn’t get more attention.
Yep - that's what happened and I didn't pay attention when booking originally - noticed it when I went in for seat selection (which I had skipped at booking).

The 40 points are coming here because BKK-HKG is marked as Polaris, and OP is currently booked into B class on that flight.
Yes - that's why I was wondering how my friend's itinerary ha sonly 30 PP's deducted -- and I confirmed that he's waitlisted on both sectors. Quite bizarre.
Seems like I'm just saving 10 PP - though I don't want that to result in him getting stuck in the back and me being up front for that short leg, so may just call in and get it fixed (or remove the requests for the short leg). BKK-HKG is 2 hour afternoon flight after all.

In my book yes -- I don't want to wind up with a middle seat in Premium Plus on an overnight flight - a window seat in E+ is better for the most part.
