Unless a true road warrior who gets status by default (just for flying to work) I believe that status needs to be looked at carefully. There is then a cost to maintain status and if this cost is greater than the benefits then you really need to look at what you are doing. It is a very personal issue and no one else's formula will work for you.
I see some that work all year long to get status for a holiday and sometimes I wonder if simply paying more for your vacation will give the status you want (and probably cheaper than all those MRs).
