Depends on the programme/airline/routes you do. Many airlines give out meaningful things like extra luggage allowances, upgrades or lounge access to low/mid-tier elites, and of course a few extra reward miles. The key is selecting the correct combination of airline and FFP (might be different to your chosen airline if it's a better deal as a FFP and gives you alliance-wide bennies) to fit your needs.
