And you should expect ...summer prices during this period, and the island (and everything that goes to the island...) to be packed with the well-known consequences. This is more or less the case with other islands in the Cyclades complex (where Santorini belongs too...)
Well everything depends on your mood and what you want exactly: if you want excellent, guaranteed fresh (and cheap) food, no island rivals Naxos! It is also a big island with excellent beaches (though the water is chilly during that period of the year, as in all Aegean sea islands) and good night life (not the variety you find in Mykonos or Santorini, but I don't think you'll really miss something). Expect it to be crowded (but without the "Mykonos impact" on the prices) too during the Easter week, its very close to Athens too!
I wouldn't propose big islands right now (like Crete, you need a visit to Greece only for Crete...), since it is your first time in Greece. My first big-island picks for some other occasion would be Samos (island of Pythagoras, all-green, great monuments and nature, unbelievable beaches and mountains, also close (1.5hrs by high speed boat) to Patmos a small, beautiful and cosmopolitan island where St John wrote the Apocalypse and also really close to Turkey for a combined short trip), Corfu (in the Ionian sea), Rhodes.
For now, stay close to Athens. Santorini is a must see, not just on your honeymoon... The view of the volcano is breathtaking, you don't wanna miss that. I would also suggest you to combine Naxos and Mykonos (everyday boat and high speed vessel among all these islands) on this trip. Budgetwise, your base could be Naxos, you won't regret it. Second pick (for a base) is Santorini and third would be Mykonos, especially for the Easter week.
THANK YOU andre1970 ~ you give some great advise. My husband and I considered "Good" Week and Easter before buying our tickets so we will be avoiding these crowds and prices by being there in early April. We have been doing our research and really wanted to do a Athens-Rhodes-Symi-(maybe Turkey for a day trip)-Santorini-Athens (fly out of) trip. We have eleven days and nights for our trip. However, we are finding it odd that there are no flights or ferries b/w Rhodes and Santorini. You supposedly have to fly into Athens from Rhodes and get a flight to Santorini. Does anyone know if you can actually travel straight from Rhodes to Santorini? And does this itinerary seem to be too ambitious . If it is, we were thinking of doing Athens-Naxos-Santorini, but we are saddened by the fact of not reaching Rhodes. You never know when you can get back and there are so many other great places in this world to visit. Thanks for all the great advice
