I at one time had a mild fear of flying (crazy for a FF, I know!) and found Ch9 to be very reassuring. There is something nice about hearing the calm voice of the pilot saying that we're experiencing "a touch of light chop" when you think the plane is bouncing around the sky.

Now I like it because I think it's cool to know where we are, how we get routed for takeoffs/landings, and hearing some of the unusual stuff (like ATC over Japan).
