Is there a dictionary for the jargon?
The FAA bibles are the spot to find all the information on ATC regulations, here is one for MCO
http://www.faa.gov/ATPUBS/ATC/. It explains procedures and what the phraseology means. I ALWAYS listen to ch 9 - I have a love for aviation, am a "virtual" controller in the Flight Simulator world, and see ch 9 as a kind of a "secret" that most others don't bother with. The most exciting parts and departure and arrival - most of the flight is center, center, center, center, nothing really to exciting just the flight being handed off and checking in and out of airspaces. Sometimes you get a bit of excitement like if you get put into a holding pattern, or if you hear a pilot reporting picking up an "ELT" - Emergency Locator Transmitter.
I actually carry the departure, arrival ,and airport charts on my flights to follow along and its fun for me cause I know exactly where we are. So I know once I am heading back from MCO on the Kokomo 1 arrival to ORD and I hear " United 1523 direct O'Hare" - hopefuly I am gonna get home early!
