You have an entire segment of luxury travelers who avoid the front desk on purpose. Almost every high end luxury hotel knows this requirement and offers in room check in for suites and above and back door/ side door arrival for their wealthy customers. I like to avoid the front desk because I value my time. I still fly commerical but know many who fly private to save time. One friend has a phobia on germs of the people who fly on airlines and justifies travel on a Citation and only stays at hotels that know him and his quirks down to a specific table for dinner
That doesn't sound like the kind of person who is looking to save a few bucks and get a couple perks through FHR.
For your hotel that said you have to stop by the front desk, was this in lieu of getting the in-room check in or simply that you couldn't use digital check-in on the app? Because I'd be surprised if the hotel wouldn't allow in-suite check-in if that's what you'd have with the room type booked.
