It has been more than 2 decades now since that initial order. The market is different, the CEO's of both Boeing and Delta are different and even the product offering (first built 788 vs 78X) are different. Also, both UA and AK got their orders in before DL so your theory really doesn't hold up or make much sense. Every order is essentially a paper airplane until they show up painted, interior outfitted and put into revenue service. The 787 is a proven, wildly popular aircraft that sells tremendously well for good reason; it's a very good product for the missions it serves. Thats why DL ordered it and intends to fly it.
