Regardless, OP doesn't have time for a short trip, let alone TATL.
This has been true for a long time. I take flights where the UA portion is 80-90% of the ticket and the FFC still cannot be used. It's a problem for my family (but certainly benefits UA)
Incidentally, I did not know there was a change that FFCs cannot be extended. Just recently, I changed a ticket for one of my kids with the intent that I was going to have to get an extension. I guess I will need to phone the premier line and beg for a travel cert after I review that thread
