I have just got back from a UK-PVG-ICN trip and TWOV worked fine. Many thanks to the posters in this thread who gave me the information I needed to be confident in it.
On the way in I got the 240 hour TWOV sticker in my passport and stayed in Shanghai for a couple of days, on the way back I was only overnighting and got the 24 hour TWOV sticker.
For the 240 hour immigration wanted to see my accommodation confirmation, for the 24 hour they weren't bothered.
In both cases the onward tickets were not on the same PNR.
No problems checking in at Manchester in UK (no extra doc check needed on LHR-PVG as it was all in the system) or City Airport in Seoul (for ICN) by just showing printout of onward flight details.
