On the pre Christmas flight I assumed it was an IT error and phoned up BA - but the friendly agent confirmed that there really wasn't a single other seat available.
Both flights appeared to be completely full.

Is this now a thing that all seats are preallocated?
or was it just because the flights were completely full?
or just a Christmas thing?
Theoretical seating will pre allocate seats at T-72, seat choices for those with low/no status will be (very) limited. Check the first few posts on this thread

FAQ : 'Theoretical Seating' : Blocked seats / seat blocking and status

Theoretical seating will do its best to keep people on the same booking seated together, further limiting options for others
