Is Amex customer service reasonable/understanding in cases like this where the qualifying transaction was made during the qualifying period BUT it didn't post until after the offer expired, or am I SOL?
In my experience Amex (as well as Chase) has unfortunately not been reasonable or understanding when something like this occurs - its an uphill battle. Maybe Amex will be more lenient than Chase if you try hard enough and will give you a credit manually; you can keep us posted if you have any success with them in ~3 months time.
I don't have access to the terms of your particular offer, but their standard practice is to include some type of wording regarding the charge(s) needing to post with a date that is by the offer deadline and they cannot be responsible for any delays resulting in a charge posting with a date that is after the offer expired.
I may sound like a broken record, but I'll say it again anyway- it's best to avoid using any offers or card benefits on the day they are at to expire precisely because of this issue. Good luck.
