Last week I had to wait behind half a dozen people who hadn't been bothered to use the kiosk before joining the queue and who then couldn;t look into a camera or manage to put their fingers on the reader. And that was after waiting for 15 in the main queue before the sub queues broke out.
Some airports have a separate queue for those who register, enforced by stickers and line agents. That was my experience at FCO.
It seems there are always people who have problems with the egates and they can make lines much slower.
