Take it with you to the gate. If the carry-on fits in the overhead bin, it doesn't need to be checked. If it doesn't (depends e.g. on the load factor of the flight), it will be gate checked. On ATR flights, gate checked bags will be collected when exiting the aircraft, so you don't need to wait for them at the baggage carousel.
