booked a RT LAX-PDX in coach. Upgrade offer for $95 each way. Checked the 'change flight' option and to change to First (Z) was $195 so only $5 more than the upgrade route. I took the latter, also since it was well below my typical threshold of $1/minute flight time.
You can independently upfare in each direction of travel (since each one-way direction of a roundtrip will be booked on a separate fare), just not individual segments in a one-way direction as they are (usually) booked on a single fare component. Sounds like there was Z open in each direction in your case. If you are booking on your own dime, you could just pay fare diff at booking time.
