There is a DEN>BZN flight available 7:30pm-9:22pm Monday that I'd really like to get on. It's probably shorter than MCT which is why I can't book it, but with GE and no checked bag I think I can make it as long as my incoming flight is on time. Can I "same day" standby on this flight even though my original UA flight is the next day?

If not, there's a WN flight at 9:30pm, so I'll probably just throw away the final segment rather than stay overnight.
If you can get past TSA, you may be able to get onto the later flight, yes. Also, you may be able to do a same-day confirmed change in the app once your PTY-DEN coupon is lifted (generally, not long after the door closes).
