AC staff do that in quite a few outstations.

Even in Canada AC have shown (belatedly, admittedly) that they understand how to group people into zones when there is enough space around the gate area - c.f. YOW gate 17. The problem is that in quite a few stations, including all three of their hubs (YYZ, YVR and YUL) there are quite a few gates that do not have the space. I like the new Zone 1 / Zone 2 / no other zone signs setup when space is at a premium and they cannot setup dedicated zone lines.
