Not sure if you're being facetious or not, but it doesn't have to go to that extreme. Gate staff for EVA for example... they have those boxing placards with Zone x.... the gatestaff just checks to make sure you're in the right zone and then at the right time, they start the boarding process... boarding completes on time and without much incident.
But then we wouldn't have any DYKWIA stories....
AC staff do that in quite a few outstations.
Even in Canada AC have shown (belatedly, admittedly) that they understand how to group people into zones when there is enough space around the gate area - c.f. YOW gate 17. The problem is that in quite a few stations, including all three of their hubs (YYZ, YVR and YUL) there are quite a few gates that do not have the space. I like the new Zone 1 / Zone 2 / no other zone signs setup when space is at a premium and they cannot setup dedicated zone lines.
