Back on the farm 40 years ago we used manually operated drafting gates, todays livestock sorting tech could be utilized for airplane boarding.
Not sure if you're being facetious or not, but it doesn't have to go to that extreme. Gate staff for EVA for example... they have those boxing placards with Zone x.... the gatestaff just checks to make sure you're in the right zone and then at the right time, they start the boarding process... boarding completes on time and without much incident.
But then we wouldn't have any DYKWIA stories....
