CC spend can help. You earn between 5-11 redeemable miles and status points ("loyalty points") per dollar spent on AA flights (depending on status), and besides that you can earn 1 status point per dollar spent on the credit card. The current status thresholds are 40k, 75k, 125k, and 200k, just to give you an idea.
