Well, flight remainded W4 up until physical check in opened and indeed only bulkhead seats were not taken, so yes the bulkhead Preferred Seats presumably remained not free at OLCI...
However at desks they said W is now full (from upgrades?) and app shows no leftover seats so all this was moot haha. Does mean those late upgraders got the best seats (if one likes bulkheads).

Asking because my upcoming flight is selling W4, I'm in 20L and seat next to me, 20J, which is a Preferred Seat has not yet been not taken.
Assuming the other pax who have not yet paid extra for Preferred Seats, will continue to not do so, and those pax are not status pax, and the seats remain not free at (OL)CI, and flight remains >W2, does this mean I will "by definition" have an empty adjacent seat?
On IB, CX, BA and AA, the bullheads are not treated as paid extra so there's no false expectations setting up...
