The reason US3 have such an open and relatively transparent upgrade process is because space available upgrades on short haul are arguably the most important perk for their FF programs. And frankly filling up an empty J cabin with complimentary upgrades (even if they didn’t get J food) would seriously devalue the premium aspect of the J product, which arguably would be quite costly to them in the long run.
