It looks like the A220s have the range and short-field performance but at a lower seat count. I'm not sure how close that is because the data I found didn't get specific about the cabin configuration though it looks like they were listing high-density economy single-cabin for max capacity. With the different cabin widths, that might not translate proportionally to a F/E+/E configuration in each fleet.
The upcoming 737-7 MAX is projected to have a longer range and larger seating capacity. That may be what they're waiting for though I don't think they've ever specified any intentions.
That makes sense! I know there has been rumors over a 220-500 which would be more on par but it's one of those if it ever happens. I did see somewhere else that it was mentioned about maybe in about 10 years they would look at another smaller fleet such as the e190 or a220 but I think that is a long way off and I guess could be the replacement if they can get another 5-10 years out of the old -700s.
