I let a 50k cert expire this year also - could not use it - I earn my status staying in CY/RI and similar mid-level places on OPM.... even with the buy-ups it is hard to use a 50k (let alone a 40k) at any place that I would view as a "vacation"... at least the NUA have some chance of being used.....
