Comment:
Was able to score a decent deal on a trip last week, so decided to cross off a long-standing bucket list item. Overall a good experience, even though I probably would have wished for a more comfortable bed and a window that opened rather than just had a seemingly-operational, but ultimately nonfunctional, handle.
Arrived super early and wanted to catch a few hours of shut-eye, so didn't really insist on seeing if any upgrades were available. As it is, the room I got was fine. Window faced into the neighboring houses' roofs, so not much of a view, but I didn't really mind. Nice shower (rainfall and handle), big TV. The bed was huge, but, like I said, not super comfortable. Not much else in the room, but that's pretty normal.
There is a spa on-site, but the prices are expectedly high (1 hour - around 160-200 euro), though the on-site credit would have made them downright reasonable. I didn't end up spending all of the credit. Had a 70 euro (after tip) dinner at the Krasnapolsky Cafe: crawfish soup (good, but super salty), burger (abysmal) and creme brulee (pretty good). Got thirsty in the night and grabbed a couple of bottles of soda out of the mini bar figuring I had it covered. When I mentioned it upon checkout, the front desk clerk thanked me for my honesty (weird), but said that because I had already paid enough for my room (weird x2), she'd just comp them. She also gave me a pair of miniature souvenir wooden clogs with the hotel's logo (I didn't end up keeping them, as I don't like these kinds of tchotchkes, but it was a nice touch).
Breakfast was absolutely spectacular. Tons of your regular options - cheeses, cured meats, pastries, cereals, etc., etc., but there were also local specialties (like these slightly spicy cheese pastries I'd never tried before) and a separate Mediterranean section. Staff was super nice. Weirdly, lighting was kind of dim, so if you're the type to Insta your hotel meals, you might be disappointed.
Location on the Dam Square is unbeatable - head left or right behind the hotel, you're in the RLD, go straight and you hit the National Monument and the King's Palace in seconds. Amsterdam Centraal is a ten-minute walk away.
All in all, it was a nice enough stay and I'm glad I scratched an itch, but the only way I'd repeat would be within the confines of the FHR program.
